Christmas in Amsterdam: A Festive Wonderland

Amsterdam… A city that captured my heart like no other.

Moving here a couple of years ago opened my eyes to a different way of living—a world brimming with endless opportunities, unfiltered joy, and a fresh lens through which to view life itself, from a completely different perspective.

To outsiders, Amsterdam often conjures images of the Red Light District, coffee shops, tulips, and cheese. But living in this remarkable city unveils layers and layers of beauty and charm that go far beyond the surface.

Amsterdam has long been a sanctuary for the marginalized, a beacon of freedom and resilience, and a cradle of arts and innovation, modern fashion, recycling, and sustainability. It’s a city that blends the historical with the avant-garde, where liberation and creativity thrive.

Today, I want to share with you the magic of celebrating Christmas in Amsterdam. When winter cloaks the city’s canals and “Lego Houses”, Amsterdam transforms into a shimmering wonderland, radiating the true essence of the holiday season. Traditions steeped in history mingle with breathtaking attractions and indulgent festive treats, making Amsterdam an enchanting destination that comes alive like no other during Christmas.

Traditional Dutch Christmas Celebrations

Christmas in Amsterdam is a blend of religious customs, folk traditions, and modern festivities. The season kicks off early with Sinterklaasavond (St. Nicholas’ Eve) on December 5th. Families gather to exchange gifts, play games and enjoy rhyming poems that accompany them. This tradition sets the stage for the merriments leading up to Christmas. If you are lucky enough, you could see Sinterklass and his Peets in the canals, or walking around, and sometimes on top of the schools buildings, creating excitement and joy among children and tourists.

On Christmas Eve, many Amsterdammers attend midnight mass in the city’s historic and beautiful churches, such as the Westerkerk or Oude Kerk. December 25th and 26th – known as Eerste Kerstdag and Tweede Kerstdag – are typically spent with family, sharing meals, and enjoying the festive ambiance. What people may not know about locals, is that Dutch cherish and appreciate family time and prioritize spending Christmas in privacy with their close loved ones.
