Base Level Cars

The lowest classification in this category is the Micro Cars. They are the smallest category of automobiles, designed primarily for short-distance urban travel. They are compact, lightweight, and fuel-efficient, often featuring engines under 700cc. These cars typically measure less than 3 meters in length, making them easy to maneuver and park in crowded city spaces.  Examples of Micro Cars include the Smart ForTwo and the Renault Twizy an electric micro car.

Their small size, fuel efficiency, and ease of parking make them an ideal choice if you stay in the city.

The second classification in this lowest category is city cars, super mini, A & B-segment cars, or subcompacts, which are slightly larger than micro cars but still designed for urban environments. Typically measuring around 3.5 to 4 meters in length, with engines ranging from 1.0 to 1.5 liters. They often come with more amenities and safety features than micro cars, including better seating comfort, more cargo space, and advanced infotainment systems.

City cars and superminis are ideal for both city driving and short to medium-distance trips, suitable for small families or individuals who need more space than a micro car offers. Examples include the Fiat 500, the Chevrolet Spark,  the Ford Fiesta, and Toyota Yaris.

These cars bridge the gap between the smallest micro cars and larger family vehicles, offering a practical solution for urban commuters and small families by combining compact size with enhanced features.

Small Level Cars

This brings us to the C-Segment, family, or compact car segment. Here we encounter well-known and popular car models including the Volkswagen Golf, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes A-Class.

Major car brands build on the reputation of their conventional models, reflecting durability, quality, and value. When renting these cars, keep in mind that luggage space is often limited, so fitting three suitcases may not be feasible unless you are willing to use the back seat for extra storage.

Mid Level Cars

The next category is the mid-level cars, also known as D-segment cars in Europe and mid-size cars in the United States, which offer more space, comfort, and features than compact cars. Typically measuring around 4.6 to 4.9 meters in length, these vehicles provide a spacious interior with ample legroom and cargo space, making them suitable for longer journeys and family use. These cars are a versatile and popular segment in the automotive market, catering to a wide range of needs.

They come with a range of engine options, from efficient four-cylinder engines to more powerful V6 engines. The design of D-segment cars includes advanced safety features, high-quality materials, premium sound systems, and advanced driver-assistance systems.

Examples of D-segment cars include the Toyota Camry, the Ford Mondeo,  the Mazda6, the Volkswagen Passat, the Mercedes C-class and the BMW 3 series.

Besides the Mercedes and BMW, most of these cars provide ample room for 5 people. In these cars, the three suitcases start to fit.

The Hybrid and EV Cars (All Categories)

Hybrid models are gaining traction as rental car companies expand their offerings to include more environmentally friendly options.

The established car brands have integrated new electric vehicle (EV) series into their line-ups, enhancing their luxury offerings with advanced and sustainable technology. If you want to rent EVs, BMW has the “i Series” with models like the i3 and i4 (mid-level) and i8 (top-level) and Audi’s e-tron series, including the Q4 e-Tron, for instance. The Tesla Model 3 and Model S are popular, but increasingly, Chinese electric car brands such as GAC Motor, BYD Auto, Changan, and Geely Auto are appearing in rental company fleets.

EVs and hybrids are marketed as premium, eco-friendly options, leading to higher demand and perceived value. However, the cost difference is primarily due to the lower initial purchase price of petrol and diesel cars, simpler refueling infrastructure, and established maintenance processes.

Upper Level Cars

Moving up the hierarchy, we find upper-level car models and brands. These companies are perceived by many customers as luxury models and brands, with associated higher pricing and perceived quality.

Upper-level cars, known as executive (E-segment) and luxury (F-segment) cars, represent superior design and comfort, advanced technology, and greater performance. Well-known brands include BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Range Rover, and Tesla.

Executive cars typically measure around 4.8 to 5 meters in length, while luxury cars often exceed 5 meters. These vehicles come equipped with powerful engines, ranging from turbocharged four-cylinders to V8s and V12s, emphasizing performance and smoothness. The interiors feature premium materials like leather and wood, and state-of-the-art technology, including advanced safety systems, adaptive cruise control, panoramic sunroofs, and customizable ambient lighting.

Examples of executive cars include the BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Audi A6, and the Tesla Model S, for instance.

Luxury cars include models that are an upgrade of the model series such as the BMW 7 Series, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Audi A8, and the Porsche Panamera. These cars cater to those who prioritize comfort, technology, and prestige.

MPVs and SUVs

The next category are Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and one thing you might notice is that SUVs are often at the top of the rental car hierarchy and come with a higher price tag. This is due to their popularity, spaciousness (luggage and people), safety standards, advanced features, and versatility, making them a preferred choice for families and groups.

If you want to rent EV SUVs, BMW is expanding its lineup with SUV-type cars including the iX3, and iX. Mercedes-Benz introduced the EQ sub-brand with models such as the EQC and EQS. Audi’s e-tron series, including the e-Tron SUV, for instance.

Top Level Cars

At the top of the rental car hierarchy are the Top Level Cars: Supercars, Sports Cars, Convertibles, and Roadsters, which command higher rental prices due to their exceptional performance, advanced features, unique design, and limited availability. Popular rental brands and models include Supercars such as Bugatti, L****amborghini, and Ferrari, Sports Cars like the Porsche 911, and convertibles such as the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, and the Audi A5 Cabriolet.

Holiday travel typically constitutes about 50-60% of all car rentals, with people increasingly seeking unique and memorable experiences during their vacations. In this context, renting a Supercar or Convertible offers more than just transportation, it provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive a vehicle that delivers unmatched performance and luxury. For many travelers, the thrill of driving a Lamborghini or enjoying the open road in a BMW Z4 Convertible enhances the overall travel experience, making their trip more special and memorable. These high-end cars allow travelers to indulge in the ultimate driving experience, turning an ordinary vacation into an extraordinary adventure and creating lasting memories and stories to share.

Car Model Classification Systems

Car market segments and legal classifications are systems used to categorize cars based on size, features, and intended use. The Euro Car Segment is a European system categorizing cars from A-segment (smallest) to F-segment (largest luxury cars). The Euro NCAP Class focuses on safety ratings, categorizing cars based on size and type to provide relevant safety assessments. The US EPA Size Class, used primarily in the United States, classifies vehicles based on interior volume, including categories like minicompact, subcompact, compact, mid-size, and full-size.

Other common segment terms include microcar, city car, subcompact, compact, mid-size, and full-size, which describe cars informally based on their size, style, or use. These classifications help consumers, manufacturers, and regulators understand and compare different types of vehicles, providing a comprehensive framework for identifying and choosing cars.
